Every spring, America celebrates Arbor Day, when everyone is encouraged to plant new trees. But is this the best time of year to plant a tree? The somewhat complicated answer is … it depends. Different species of tree do better if planted at different times of the year. Let’s, pardon the pun, dig a little deeper today on the blog, and examine the best time of the year to plant different kinds of trees.
Spring
The cooler weather during the spring makes this the optimum season to plant any variety of evergreen trees. This is also typically the rainier season, and the extra moisture helps your trees form strong root structures after planting is complete. You still can plant an evergreen tree during other seasons and it should do fine but, no matter what month and season it may be, you want to make sure your new evergreen tree gets plenty of water.
Fruit trees and shrubs can be tricky in this area of East Tennessee. Ideally, you want to plant a new fruit tree as early in the year as you can – just do it when the ground is not frozen. Fruit trees need abundant sunlight and, by planting them in the early spring, you are setting them up to get plenty of spring rain. Species that bloom more quickly, such as a blueberry bush, can be planted later in the spring. The biggest challenge with fruit trees is, as they start to produce, keeping away insects and other pests.
Fall: Maple trees
You actually can plant maple trees later in the year if you want, as long as the ground has not begun to freeze. Maple trees flourish in partial shade and shade is more prevalent during this season. As for where to plant a new maple tree? Choose an area where the soil has good drainage. Otherwise, your maple can become saturated, which may hinder its growth. If you cannot plant a maple tree in the fall, do it in the spring instead.
What if the type of tree I want is not listed?
